Lucas Janeschitz-Kriegl, MD, is a clinician-scientist at the UPMC Vision Institute and the Institute of Molecular and Clinical Ophthalmology Basel (IOB) whose work focuses on gene therapy and vision-restoration approaches for retinal diseases. His research spans preclinical therapeutic development and clinical translation, with a recent focus on quantitative imaging and computational approaches to identify patients who may benefit from emerging therapies and to determine how treatment effects can be detected clinically. Before joining UPMC, he headed the Retinal and Macular Degeneration Clinical Group at IOB. He also designed and led EyeConic, an international multicenter study investigating residual cone structure in advanced retinal degeneration to improve patient selection for emerging therapies. His broader interests include imaging biomarkers, clinical trial endpoints, and translational study design.
